Bun mam, a Southern Vietnamese dish

I have realized that I seldom talked about Vietnamese cuisine, besides a few popular dishes. This is quite strange as I like eating as much as shopping. Maybe it is because the huge backlog of my travel posts which I am trying to clear as quickly as possible.

I do not consider myself as a foodie. That requires a lot of knowledge and researches when eating and writing about a certain dish. I just like to eat good food. And good food to me might not taste so great to others, except for desserts. I am very confident in my sweet tooth. And very picky with which cakes/chocolate/snacks I consume. Every calorie counts after all.

Therefore, I can rarely recommend a good Vietnamese restaurant in Singapore. It is very frustrating to eat Vietnamese cuisine in this tiny island. The country is near to Vietnam, but hardly offers some decent places. At least, what I think good enough to pay more than 6 bucks for a bowl of beef noodles (known as "pho" to some). So once in a while, I will have to cook myself.

Yep, I do cook, if gasping is what you are doing. And I believe I cook quite well myself. I am just too lazy to cook more regularly. I do not like rice much, which is very strange for an Asian. I prefer noodles (especially those made from rice). And to have a delicious bowl of rice noodle soup, it takes some effort to churn out a good pot of soup. Only when I am in the mood, I will jump into the kitchen and cook some special Vietnamese dishes. This time, it is "Bun mam".

This is a less known dish from the South of Vietnam. It is particularly popular in the west of Southern Vietnam, i.e. Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, etc. In this region, it is also called "Bun nuoc leo" with different versions for different towns. However, there is always one common point, the soup.

Ah yes, the soup. This is what makes the dish so well-known with the local and might make foreigners walk away hastily. It is cooked from a variety of "salted fish" sauce and the smell of these sauces is very strong. Many people, even Vietnamese, could not stand the overwhelming smell. Some told me these sauces stank. So yeah, if you can't stand the smell, it must be hard to enjoy the food itself.

For my version of "bun mam", I use "mam ca linh" and "mam ca sac" to cook the stock. Then I add "ngai bun", a root which I think only those who know how to cook this dish have heard about it. And you must have it for the soup. If not, the dish will turn into "mam va rau", which could only be eaten with rice. After removing all the bones from those salted fish and other undesirable and unidentified things, I throw in some stalks of lemon grass to lessen the strong smell of the soup. At the same time, I fried some finely-chopped lemon grass and garlic to give the stock another extra kick of taste. About 5 minutes before turning off the fire, I add the above fried mixture and some eggplants into the soup. And it is ready to be served.

Due to limited resources in Singapore, I could only use squid, prawn and roasted pork as the main ingredients for my "bun mam". For the "bun" part, I buy thick bee hoon, or laksa noodles which is quite sufficient. After arrange all the ingredients into a big bowl to my liking, it is time to pour the soup in. And depending on personal liking, I will add Chinese garlic chives (he) and bean sprouts to the bowl. But it will definitely taste better with all the above ingredients. So if it is your first time to try this dish, you should try all of them and adjust your next bowl according to your taste.

Even though it has been more than 10 years since I cooked this dish, I seemed to retain my skills. If what my housemates reacted was true. And if you have a chance to try this dish, don't walk away because of the smell. Give it a try and you might have a new favourite Vietnamese dish.

Nowadays, birthday is just a reason for me to pamper myself. To buy something extravagant, to dine in fine-dining restaurants or to buy tickets to a musical and a concert. When spending my hard-earned money, I usually have a guilt trip right before and after the moment handing out my plastics. So birthday is the best excuse, only followed by Christmas. And I no longer care about how old I am (or getting upset over aging). After all, age is just a number and I feel absolutely much better than when I was 21.

That day was all about me, aka I did everything alone. Unlike when I was young and loved to have a big birthday party with lots of friends, I prefer much few companies nowadays. I feel that I don't want to fake my laugh and waste my time on those who are just being there for the sake of being there. Trust me, it is a very tiring experience, for both host and attendees. You fake yourself enough while at work. You shouldn't do that in your private time, much less your birthday.

I had quite a full-day event scheduled, considered my saturdays always start at around noon. First I had a complimentary birthday make-over, in cutesy of Chanel. Then I treated myself a nice meal at Osteria Mozza, and then enjoyed myself with a musical. I had written about my experience of watching "The music of Andrew Lloyd Webber" previously, which means I will focus on the make-over and the dinner.

It was my second professional make-over experience and Chanel won my heart wholly. The staff was very polite without making me feel awkward. The make-up artist was knowledgeable and professional. Even though it was a complimentary session, I had a feeling that she didn't do any shortcut with my make-up. She even gave me some good tips on how to draw my eye brows or apply blush. There was no hard-sell of their products, and I personally think that was a very clever sales strategy. Making customers satisfied and happy and they will spend money in your brand. That was exactly what I did. I bought a liquid foundation at full price when I could buy it at a 20% discount elsewhere.

After the make-over, I headed to Osteria Mozza for a pre-theater dinner. I chose this restaurant for a few reasons. Firstly , it is located opposite the Grand Theater of Marina Bay Sands, which means I wouldn't need to rush after the meal (who knows how long it would take to finish a meal in these fine-dining establishments). Secondly, I was craving for Italian food. And thirdly, most important, they offer a reasonably-priced pre-theater dinner set meal.

The restaurant is having very good business. When I was there, it was almost full-house. And it was around 530pm at the time. Just imagine dinner time. Of course, I had to make reservation. I didn't want to feel disappointed on that day. And being turned away for your dinner is definitely a big no.

The decoration of the establishment is understated elegance with dark-wood furniture and warm lighting. The tables are spaced cleverly without making you feel like in a tuna can. I dislike hearing others' conversations during my meal. Sometimes I just want to enjoy the food and all I can think is what this guy learns from his culinary school. Well, it is nice to know that chefs think those who order well-done steaks are idiots. But I want to enjoy my tom yam noodles in peace, damn it!

The staff was polite and well-trained. And I was glad that they allowed to have photos taken in the restaurant. You never know which restaurants are snooty enough to forbid their customers from photographing in their premises. Overall, I did enjoy the food but except for the dessert, I don't think I will try the rest again. I am a tomato-base girl, and I won't feel satisfied with my pasta if it is a macaroni or the like. Well, trying to be adventurous had some price after all.

Singapore entertainment - "The music of Andrew Lloyd Webber"

I guess it was quite a surprise to some of my friends or acquaintances to know that I love musicals. Well, I discovered that fact myself quite recently as well. But think about it, I should have known before, with my passion in "cai luong".

My first memory about musical is watching the movie "The sound of music" in my English class when I was in secondary school. The fact I had to write an essay about the film didn't discourage me from enjoying it. And I love Julie Andrews since. Her voice was gorgeous and the songs were beautiful, which made me to look for a VCD (yep, VCD, not DVD) so that I could watch it again and again.

The next musical film was "The phantom of the opera" with Gerald Butler, Emmy Rossum and Patrick Wilson as lead actors. My ex-boyfriend and I went for a midnight show and I ended up sleeping in the theater half-way of the show. I just didn't like Emmy Rossum as Christine, even if I liked both actors. And at the end of the day, movies are just movies. They aren't matches for what I could see in a musical theater.

Luckily for me, the movie version of "The phantom of the opera" didn't deter me from watching it when I was in New York last time. And the experience truly opened my eyes and gave me plenty of reasons to spend money on musical tickets, when I could. I will probably write blog post about that fantastic night at Broadway. I feel like cheating myself if I don't save a whole post for it.

And then, last year in Singapore, "Chicago" has come to Singapore with a few shows in Esplanade. I didn't know about it until the last few days. I went with a friend to watch it and fell in love all over again with musicals. Nothing beats the amazement of hearing the cast's beautiful voices, the gorgeous outfits and well-rehearsed dance composition. Not counting the joy of listening to the live music from an orchestra, albeit small. So yes, bring more musicals to Singapore.

And earlier this year in May, when I read about the show "The music of Andrew Lloyd Webber" coming to Singapore in July, I didn't even hesitate and just ran to Marina Bay Sands to buy a ticket to the show. Of course, I could buy it online but nothing beats the feeling of queuing to buy tickets to your favourite shows. And saving 30 cents was a bonus. And before you question my sanity, that trip to Marina Bay Sands was with Tracy, who was here for a short visit. Of course, I had to show her one of the new landmarks in Singapore. The Sands SkyPark is a must-visit if you are in the vicinity.

Yesterday was the night of the show I had bought, which was one of my birthday presents to myself. It was performed in the Grand Theater of Marina Bay Sands and I have to say it was money well-spent. The cast was great with Michael Mccormick was the standout actor, singing my most favourite songs like "The phantom of the opera" and "Sunset Boulevard". The way he sang and acted was the perfect way to portray the characters, which made me yearn to hear him more. It was too bad that his CD on sale last night wasn't him singing those songs. I would have bought even though I don't have a CD player at home. And the speaker of my laptop sucks.

One letdown was the costume but I understood that the show was just the combination of all the best songs in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals, so I didn't have much to complain. But still, choreography and costumes are parts of what make watching musicals magical. Next time I'm in New York, I will have to watch at least 2 shows to satisfy my hunger for musicals.

BTW, I didn't take any photo during the show as I wanted to enjoy it as best as I could. But I managed to snap some shots of the theater and of course, myself.

Shopping resolutions for the second half of 2011

Yes, I am doing my list of resolutions this late, as I didn't know what I wanted this year in January, and right now, I think I need to write these self-made promises down so that I can keep them. Also, they will act as a memo for me, if I have any urge to break them.

- Shoes: I've had a change of mind after buying my first pair of Chloe shoes. Truthfully, I was a little disappointed when opening the package and seeing the flats the first time. The material is suede, not grain leather that I'd seen in the store. Even when I read the details on the site, it didn't state suede, just leather, though the photos indicated differently. Guess I need to trust my eyes more in the future. And the fitting is a tad tight, but that is the risk I was willing to take. Then, that disaster with the re-heeling and re-soling. I am now very conflicting. Half of me wants to run to YSL and buy that pair of Love flats. Another half doesn't want to buy any more shoes, except those Ferragamo jelly flats for Pre-Fall 2011.

And guess what? I've decided not to buy shoes until my next travel, except for that pair of Ferragamore jelly flats and another pair of Ferragamo Spiffy flats. That makes 2 pairs of flats within 6 months, which is reasonable and practical. And from now on, I think I will buy my other shoes overseas. The reasons are plenty. First, the next pair I want to own, quite desperately, is from Chanel and Ferragamo (I mean their leather shoes). And the prices of these two brands are marked up heavily in Singapore. I feel so cheated to buy anything from them here (again, jelly flats are the exceptions, I have no other choices). And when they are having sale, like now, there are nothing left in my size. Trust me, I tried to go on the first day of sale, and there were nothing left, unless you have giant feet.

So overseas is the solution. When you travel, you feel less guilty to shop. Just think that you might not have a second chance to buy them, it will help you to hand over your card/cash. I made that mistake, not buying a pair of Chanel shoes and I regret it everyday. So next time, I will just close my eyes and pay for it. After all, prices never go down, they just go up every year. And the brands to focus on are Chanel, Lanvin, Ferragamo and Louboutin.

One big note to myself: No re-heeling and re-soling in Singapore for flats. Even if it means the life spans of my shoes are shorter, but at least I feel happy when wearing them.

- Jewelry: No buying online, unless it is a designer brand, i.e. YSL and Chanel. Chanel means its vintage earrings, brooches and necklaces. But I might want to wait until I go back to Manhattan to shop in those fabulous consignment stores. YSL means its in-store costume jewelry. I'm still in love with its arty rings. Such a statement piece.

Anyway, back to the reason why I won't buy jewelry online, it is because I was badly burnt by an experience with Amrita Singh jewelry. The photos on the site were deceiving. Except for its jewelry box, which is pretty, the two rings I bought were such a let-down. Even though I knew that they were made in China, I thought the quality should be above average as they were charged with such high price for gold-plated material and semi-precious stones (US$100 for a ring before sale isn't cheap). When I saw the rings, I was shocked due to the cheap-looking metal. Gold-plated, my ass! And the craftsmanship was poor, really poor. On the way back home, I had half a mind to throw them into the bin. Yep, they were that bad! So yeah, no more online "unknown jewelry" shopping!

So what will I do about jewelry? Hand-made and order-to-make. I've just realized that Thailand is a heaven for gorgeous hand-made jewelry and I will wait for those Thai fairs/festivals to buy those. Or I can travel to Bangkok and bankrupt myself with those beautifully-made rings, earrings, necklaces, etc. For order-to-make, I have my trusted friend and our favourite shop back in Vietnam, I just need to find the designs and send them to her. She will choose the stones, adjust the designs to match with those stones and have them made. When I go back to Vietnam, she will give them to me. The cost will be definitely much cheaper than those badly-made Amrita Singh rings.

- Clothes: Massimo Dutti and Zara are the shops to go. For dresses, DvF is still my trusted brand whenever one in my size is available on sale on Shopbop (the cheapest on the net and no shipping charge). And I will definitely stock plenty of them the next time I go to New York.

- Skincare: No more buying until I finish two third of what I have in stock. No more space to store. This means no shopping/shipping the next three months.

- Cosmetics: Except for sunblocks, facial mist and liquid foundation, no purchase is needed until 3 months later.

Andy Lau and Jacky Cheung

It is my ticket to Jacky Cheung (Truong Hoc Huu)'s 1/2 Century Tour concert in Singapore this August. And I can't wait until then.

My affair with Hong Kong TV series/movies started early. I first watched HK TV kungfu series when I was about 8 years old. Pretty young, right? Like reading books, I watch movies and TV series very fast. I could finish one series in 2 or 3 days, given that all the episodes had been released. As I'm Vietnamese, I had to wait for the distributors to have all these series voiced over. Therefore, I didn't really know what Cantonese sounded like until much later.

And it was no wonder that my idols at the time were Andy Lau, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Ekin Cheng, Dicky Cheung, Louis Koo, etc. As long as they were in the cast, I would rent the video tapes to bring home and watch. There are some certain series that I keep watching until now (more than 10 times, I lost count after 5 times). From TV series to movies was a logical sequence and before I knew, I was listening to Cantopop daily. And the Four Heavenly Kings were my favourite singers. Why? Cos Andy Lau is one of them.

Lucky for me, it was easy to get Cantopop in Vietnam at the time, not so hard as Western music. Since then, I got to know about Jacky Cheung, Aaron Kwok and Leon Lai. Surprisingly, I didn't and still don't like Aaron Kwok and Leon Lai. Don't ask me why? I just feel unconnected with those two. But two out of four was enough. Andy Lau and Jacky Cheung's music was and still is my most favourite. And I promised myself that I would go to Hong Kong to watch them sing live.

Well, I haven't visited Hong Kong yet. It may be a surprise for you but I just don't have the mood to visit Asian countries. Europe and the States still call to me. Maybe I might go this year, since I only have small budget for travel this year. Either Hong Kong or Taiwan. Or even China (if Tracy decides to go, I don't think I can travel to China alone). Anyway, back to Andy Lau and Jacky Cheung. I haven't been to Hong Kong but I have watched Andy singing live. And soon Jacky.

I watched Andy Lau's concert 3 years ago. That was his Wonderful World 2008 tour and I never regretted paying around 180 bucks for the show. The concert was magnificent and mesmerizing. Andy Lau is a great performer and his voice isn't that bad either. I had a very good time listening and watching him on stage. In fact, I'm waiting for him to come back to Singapore. I will definitely buy a 1st or 2nd class ticket this time. Until then, I have Jacky Cheung's live show to look forward to.

Shopping wish list for 2011

About 3 months have gone by and I seem to be right on track of some of my resolutions, which I hadn't written down at all. Sometimes I wonder if it is that necessary, but if I have the mood, I guess I will make that list (maybe in June... lol).

Anyway, this wish list might have its pros and cons. Pros is that I have some focuses to spend my hard-earned money on, instead of buying mindlessly and the whole damage is still the same. Cons is, well, it makes me more determined to get those. But still, sooner or later, I will have to buy some of these, can't really resist the temptation.

- Shoes: Maybe 2 pairs. I'm looking at these at the moment: YSL patent 'Love' ballerina flats, YSL Tribtoo pumps, Salvatore Ferragamo heels or flats, Christian Louboutin Pigalle pumps.

- Clothes: Dresses, skirts and jackets/cardigans are the focus. A pair of nicely cut pants should be great too. The brands should be DvF, Massimo Dutti and Zara. Again, I dun really wanna invest too much in clothes. Not a wise choice for me.

- Accessories: I'm changing my mind about belts. I guess I should have a few basic designs to go with my clothes. It really makes a difference. That is when I dun wear my empire-waist dresses. For scarves, Hermes is the only brand I will pay most attention to. Call me a snob but once you wear a Hermes scarf, you dun really want to buy another brand. Unless it's a gift, of course. Finally, sunglasses. A pair of Chanel sunglasses is all I want for this year. I have had Mont Blanc, Fendi, YSL and LV pairs. It's time to get Chanel for my collection. The big question is whether they have the design I like.

- Jewelry: Either fine or costume jewelry, I dun really care. If something catches my eyes and within my budget, I guess I will buy it. But I will try to avoid clip-on earrings. I have a pair of clip-on Chanel earrings and it's painful to wear it. Le sigh... Semi-precious stone jewelry is also my love of the moment.

- There will be NO budget for bag or wallet this year. I can say I'm quite content with what I'm having now. Next year will be another game though.

2010 Year In Review

Another 9 days and this year will come to an end. How time flies... And it is time to do a year in review, just to see what have happened to me this year, good and bad alike.

- Travelling: 3 continents and 4 countries, not bad at all. Spending my new year count-down in New York (albeit in a hotel, mind you!), experience a Hanoi winter (which I didn't like at all) and enjoying an European autumn, I guess I have achieved part of my travel dream. Now I just wish I could strike some lottery and I could spend a whole year to travel the rest of the world.

- Shopping: Less than 10 pairs of shoes which I could proudly say I have successfully followed my plan from last year. A whole lot more accessories were acquired so that I could utilized all the clothes I am having without feeling being repeated. And the biggest achievement of all? My first ever Chanel 2.55, lovingly bought from 31 Rue Cambon store in Paris. Hopefully I will be able to showcase it this Christmas. Now my big question: What to buy next year for bag, after I had bought my dream bag? And no, I won't buy Hermes until I earn double what I am earning now. That is my motivation. Maybe I will not buy any bag next year. Saving for a Delvaux or Celine on my next Europe trip.

- Work: Many changes and no change at the same time. I've learnt quite a bit this year, in terms of corporate politics and other nonsenses. I am feeling content right now, knowing what I should and want to do next year.

- Relationship: I'm still single, if you are wondering. But I believe in fate. Also, marriage doesn't always equal to happiness. I'm glad if my friends find their halves, but if I am content and happy with my current status, I think being single is great in its own way.

- Family: This is one aspect of my life that I don't want to write down. So let's just leave it blank for now. But I think I am a good daughter and sister this year.

- Friends: They are always there when I need them. And I am when they need me. With my friends scattering all over the world, this is the best way to describe our great friendships.

- Health: Not my best year. I think I'm gaining weight and my ankle is preventing me to exercise. I really need to be more serious in my attempt of slimming down. And yes, I will try to watch my diet.

What else to reminisce? If there is, I will just add on later. Next post will be my resolutions for next year, which I never manage to finish all (even half is great). But the point is to have some goals to look up to, ne?

Another ankle sprain (I think) after 2 years

It's the 7th month. Call me superstitious but I feel it was bound to happen one way or another. I did all the things I would never do normally.

First, wearing high heels when it was raining. If you meet me often, you would know that I even bought a pair of jelly shoes to wear during this rain season. And today, I ignored my common sense, or something made me ignorant. I had picked up my jelly shoes, and then put it down, just to pick another pair of high heels.

Second, chasing after a bus. Well, I stopped doing that for a long time, whenver I have to go to that bus stop. Why? Cos I need to cross over an overhead bridge. And the stair going down to the bus stop is very steep. I didn't know why but when I saw the bus today, I ran for it. And I still had two third of the bridge to cross over, plus the staircase. How the hell did I think I could catch the bus? But no, I had to run.

When I ran down the stairs, the heels of my shoes caught the step, I slipped. I dropped for a few more steps before I settled myself. My shoes fell a few more steps further. I just sat there, on a staircase, feeling so painful. One kind uncle picked up my shoes and asked me if I needed any help. I could only say thanks and asked him to continue on his way.

I sat there for about 5 mins when the rain was so heavy. The wind blew the water into my face and clothes. But I couldn't move at all. After a while, I tentatively tried to see if I could stand and walk. Yes (Thank God), but not with my shoes. So I decided to go back to my house, bare-footed. It was raining so it wasn't that dirty. But it was a painful walk.

A fortune teller told me earlier this year: I would have some accident with my limbs. I thought I had had that with my arms burnt by josh sticks during CNY. But apparently, I still had another accident await (hopefully, the last one of this year). And it's the 7th month. I'm not surprised but of course, I'm not happy.

I have to laugh at myself though. Cos the first thing after I feel less painful that I think about is: Thank God! It's this month, not next month. I still have time to recover before my France trip. So yeah, let's cross fingers that it's just a mild ankle sprain.

Feeling lost

Suddenly I'm feeling like I don't know what to do with my life. It's getting very routine and I just have a feeling I'm gonna explode sometime soon.

Being a positive person, this kind of emotion makes me restless. I'm just crossing my fingers that I will pass this phase soon.

Happy 27

I have turned 27 today. Yep, 3 more years and I will hit the big 30. But still, I feel myself as young as when I was 25, or even 21. Hahahaha, I might be stretching the number but thoughts are all that count. If you think you are young, then you are young.

Here I am, on the 1st day of my 27th year on earth.

My shoe collection

I have made a decision with regards to my bags and shoes. From now on, I will try to buy those with good quality. Considered these as investment pieces, this will help me from buying too many shoes and bags which don't last me more than 3 months. Also, given my limited space, I will need to focus more on building a small but well-covered wardrobe. Quality over quantity.

At the moment, I have only 4 pairs of designer shoes. These were bought from different sale events and with discount from 70% and above. I am very proud of this collection even though I haven't managed to establish a personal shoe style. Anyway, I allow myself to acquire about 4 pairs of designer shoes a year. Yes, no more cheap shoes and no more seasonal de-cluttering!

1. Alexander McQueen Mary Jane Heels



Red and brown. Suede and fine leather. Very sharp combination. Dislike its pointy toe cap though, cos it hurt my feet terribly. I have wide feet, ya see!

2. D&G buckle crunched flats



One thing I like about leather-made accessories is that the more you wear them, the more they become beautiful. This pair of flats isn't an exception. I have been wearing it for more than 6 months and it looks prettier and prettier. However, due to the crunched design, it was a pain in the ass to wear. Until I cut the rubber band and it is perfect.

3. Marc Jacobs dark blue pumps



Square toe and chunky heel, a comfortable design? Nah, dun let it deceive you. It's 4-inch high which can really kill you if you walk too much. Talking from a painful experience here! But I love the additional height it gives me and the compliments I got from wearing it. Just be prepared to soak my poor feet in warm water at the end of the day though.

4. Yves Saint Laurent Ballerina Flats in Purple



My latest addition into the collection. Actually I wanted to buy the silver cage bow heels but that pair cost over SGD1k, even after a 50% discount. And it is 4-inch high and I was still traumatized over my Marc Jacobs pumps. Anyway, I just realized I hadn't had any purple shoes before. So here it is, lovely sitting there in my shoe rack.

All in all, for this year, I have bought 2 pairs. I might buy about 2 more pairs, if there are any good deals out there for me grab! My wish list includes a pair of Lanvin flats and a pair of Christian Louboutin heels.

GSS 2009

I'm so broke this sale season! After 4 months of not-so-much shopping, GSS 2009 has been a disaster for me! I've been spending too much now, and in combination of other events, I'm nearly broke. But of course, I'm happily broke.

To keep myself in track, I will use this post to list all the good purchases I have been making. Dun read if you are not a shopaholic. You have been warned.

This time of the year!!!

It's the last Saturday of 2007! Wow, 1 year has come and gone so quickly that I really feel like it was just yesterday I celebrated Christmas with all of my friends in Vietnam! How time flies!

Christmas this year was really boring for me! Staying at home and watching Japanese drama series the whole day! All because I wanted to avoid the crowd in Orchard Road! Sometimes, it's not that good to be too free!

Anyway, it's the time for me to look back and see what I have done in 2007! Which resolutions have I managed to get done? And what should I focus on improving in 2008?

Here are my 8 resolutions for 2007:

1. To slim down at least 3 kg --> I dunno if I have slimmed down! I haven't weighed myself since... (can't remember! Hheheh) But I just assume I've lost some weight for the sake of my confidence! Well, I'm vain, I know!
2. To start learning ballroom dance --> Yeah, I've managed to learn latin dance for 6 months and then stopped until now! Working and dancing dun mix well, I guess!
3. To spend less on clothes and shoes --> Errr! I dunno how much I have spent on these! Guess it wasn't less than what I had spent on the year before! Couldn't help it! I'm addicted to shopping! Excuses, I know!
4. To earn and save more money --> Saving money? No! Earning more money? Yes! Changing job with better pay? Yes, but I'll count this for 2008 'cos I won't start my new job until next year!
5. To learn Japanese again --> Again, I managed to register for a course! But learning Jap in Vietnam sucks! The Vietnamese teacher has a very bad accent which I couldn't stand! Overzealous classmates who still think good grades are everything that matters! And this is just a language school!
6. To get in touch with friends and acquaitance more frequently --> I had definitely achieved this! Congrats to me! Yay!!!
7. To be more organized --> I guess I did???
8. To read more quality books --> I'm sure I have read more books, but quality books? Not so sure! Dun laugh!

Well, what can I say? I'm a normal human who should never get all her resolutions done! That's what resolutions are, anyway! To let us to have some focus to start our new year with! I'll have my 2008 resolutions ready either on 31 December 07 or 1 January 2008! That's all for now! Cya!

Another Xmas has come!!!

Hi y'all! *Waving madly at her friends*

I've disappeared again for nearly one month! Just too many things happened and I had no time to blog! Sorry for the lack of updates though!

Firstly, update with y'all my whereabout! I'm back to Singapore and this time will be a long long stay! No more staying in Vietnam for 2 consecutive months like before! The next times I'm back to Saigon should be in short periods! So less reviews on Saigon restaurants and shopping for me!

Next, my job! I'm officially unemployed now! However, dun fret for me! Only until end of this year! I'll start my new job on 2 Jan 08! So I have a whole 10 days resting at home before going on a new exciting (hopefully) journey! Good planning, right? I'm celebrating my 12 days of Christmas now!

Last but no least, my shopping! Surprisingly I dun find sale in Singapore is attractive this time! Guess I have too many clothes so I'm in the overload mode for shopping! I'm more concentrated on collecting accessories! Online shopping is still going strong for me though! VS and its super gorgeous collections! Moreover, VS SAS is now on! Less reason for me to shop outside! But there's still Zara which I hope I can cope something from there!

Media appearances!!!

Just my sharing with the reporter! I couldn't believe that she turned it into an article. Felt a bit embarassed but said thanks to her anyway. It's not everyday you can appear on newspaper, right? Hhehhehh...

There were another 3 more appearances on HTV but I only have one in cd with me. I had to say I look quite different on screen, but still recognible.

L'Amour

May I introduce to you my new BFF, Nokia 7373 from the L'Amour Collection?

It's been 2 and a half months my ex BFF left me at Changi Airport. I was mourning for her loss and purnished myself by forcing me to use back my very old Nokia 2650. Not a pleasant experience, I assure you. When I use the word "old", it really means old. Poor him! Had to work over time with me! Even his keypad was separated from his body!

Actually, before I decided on N7373, I was thinking about Nokia N70, N72 and 7373. In the end, 7373 has won and I found myself in accompany of her, even though I had to pay for her at retail price. So how is she? So far so good.

2 megapixel camera. Pink color for the cover, sweet and elegant. 128 MB memory card. Since I've bought a cable to connect with my lappie, I can download games or whatever I like to the phone, or vice versa, I can upload my pictures I take to my lappie immediately.

What else could I ask for in a cell phone? Love it!!!

My perfume collection

For me, buying perfume or scented spray is proved to be difficult. I didn't have a habbit to use one when I was young as perfume was a luxury to me at that time. Like every girl, I love to smell great and hence the need to own some EDPs has been arising for some time. But somehow I'll get allergic to the spray after a while. It seems like I can separate the alcoholic smell from the scent which causes me headade. If this happens, I'll feel obligated to throw away the bottle and it's such a waste of money.

Back to the main topic, I ain't so passionate in collecting perfumes. I buy what I deem I can use for various occasions and there's a pattern in what I've bought so far. But let's see what they are first, okie?

• Chanel No. 5 EDP

My forever most favorite perfume in the world. It's a classic for a reason.

I simply love the powdery scent and the long-lasting staying power. EDP was costly but worth every cent.

• Very Sexy for her by Victoria's Secret EDP

Recommended to me by a friend and be a part of my collection since last year.

"Vibrant and sensuous, it's the ultimate fragrance for the woman who loves everything about being a woman.

Fragrance type: floral oriental
Top notes: pimento, clementine, cactus flower
Middle notes: camellia, hydrangea, mimosa
Low notes: white amber, musk, vanilla, blackberries"

This is a hell of strong parfum. Just 3 sprays and the smell lasts for 2 days. Yes, 2 days! That's why if you buy a 100ml (3.4oz), you can use it for 3 years. Not that I'm complaining.

• Burberry Tender Touch EDP

Bought in a perfume fair in TSC. Super cheap, $40+ for 100ml EDP.

"An intensely floral, feminine blend of green tangerine and violet leaves, rose oil, lychee, peach, and lush florals warmed with the soothing scent of musk, iris, sandalwood, and ambrette seed"

Like the name, the fragrance's very light and not too long-lasting. Suitable for feeling refeshed in the morning and then change to another scent when going out in the evening. I haven't used up to one third of the bottle. 100ml is too much though.

• Cool Water Women by Davidoff EDT

Again, bought this in that perfume fair at TSC. $21 for 50ml EDT. Quite a bargain, compared with retail price @ $70.

"Evoke sensations of vitality, energy, and sensuality. This fresh aquatic, with notes of citrus, water lily, jasmine, peach, and sandalwood, is presented in a signature ice blue bottle, designed like a delicate droplet of water."

This is one of those I've got allergic after using it a few times. Keep smelling that damn alcohol-esque smell. I haven't used it again for about 2 years. Just remember feel quite refreshed and clean.

• Max Mara Perfume by MaxMara EDP

This was bought in a coffret set, inclusive 1 bottle of shower gel and a 50 ml EDP, at a warehouse sale. Super cheap, again. Yes, I'm cheapskate, I know!

"The first perfume from the fashion house of Max Mara.

Simply elegant, sophisticated blend of florals. Top notes include, ctirus, ginger and plant sap, then blend off into lily, magnolia and orchid. Finishing off with musk, sugar cane and wood.

Maxmara is recommended for evening wear."

There is a reason for the last sentence. The fragrance is too strong to wear in the morning as it'll abuse my sensitive nose and cause me a killer headache. But it seems quite mature for me to wear at the moment. Hheheh. This is one example of impulsive purchase.

• Garden Collection by Victoria's Secret EDT Spray in Vanilla Lace

A gimmick when buying 1 body care set of Garden Collection by VS which means FREE. But this doesn't mean it's bad in any sense.

"A rich, sensual blend of vanilla and orchid with hints of amber and musk"

This is for whenever I feel so blah or no mood to put on anything too expressive. A must-have in my bag.

• Dream Angels by Victoria's Secret® Heavenly EDP (soon to be added)

As you can see, all my perfumes have 1 thing in common. They all have a sweet fragrance. Most of them have musk or vanilla or sandalwood in the notes. When I bought these, I didn't notice any of this. But my nose was more concious than my mind, wasn't it?

My wish list

Just another 2 more months, and I'll hit my quarter-life mark. Shocking, isn't it? It seems just yesterday I celebrated my 18th bday with my friends (at Hinh Nhu La, I think...) and my 21st bday in China Black (I was a party animal back then). And it's been 6 years I celebrated my birthdays without my family. I have to tell you, they were not complete fun.

So... a soon-t0-be birthday girl is entitled a wish list for herself, right? It's my first ever wish list, anyway! Anyone would like to fulfill any of my wishes, don't be shy, just go ahead and tell me! I'll love you with 1/25th part of my heart, okie?

1. Good health to live, to work and to enjoy life. Thanks so much, V.Dat, for reminding me this. You're definitely entitled a 1/25th of my heart... hehheh...
2. A digital camera, Canon IXUS or Sony DSC preferred. But I'm not choosy about gift, hehhe.

3. A new cell phone, particularly Nokia 7373. I'm using N2650 after having lost my BFF N6111

4. Dream Angels by Victoria's Secret® Heavenly Eau de Parfum Spray, either 1, 2.5 or 4.2 oz will be fine

9. A purse/wallet. I'm looking for a perfect one about a year... It's so hard. Maybe if it's a gift, I won't be so picky... LV or Gucci, take your pick... Or Mango would do well enough...

10. A bag. I'm eyeing a Guess bag, Impact Top Zip. Looks quite cute. Suitable for both working and going out
11. Marks & Spencer chocolate bars. The one's filled with hazelnuts. I don't really care abt hand made chocolate like Godiva or the like... Give me M&S chocolate and I'm a happy girl.
12. DKNY 'Be Delicious' EDP. This green apple looks too delicious to be eaten. 50ml or 100ml will be welcome.
13. Swimwear. I prefer a tankini suit, but a biniki will be appreciated. Aiming for VS or Target Go International
14. A chocolate cake at Soho Cafe. It's the best chocolate cake in Saigon. Address of the coffee house, ask me if you wanna buy it for me. Hhehheh!!!
15. Shades to wear for night-outing. Saigon streets are too dusty to go out without sunglasses any time of the day. I'd broken the pair I used at night. Any brand is acceptable, as long as the design is pretty and suits my facial shape.
